We rely on a team of people working in a variety of roles to make the FRS function. Some of the positions you'll know like the Firefighters, but others might surprise you.

Operational Roles

Firefighter:

They have two main roles. The first is to attend any kind of incident, from fires to floods, or car crashes to chemical spills. The second is to provide Fire Safety advice within the community.

Crew Manager:

Their main responsibility is the Fire Appliance and crew. But they do also take charge of smaller incidents and provide support to the Watch Manager.

Watch Manager:

They lead a number of smaller teams at larger incidents. Other duties can include being a Fire Safety Inspector.

Station Manager:

Their main duty is ensuring the Service's delivery at one or more Fire Stations. They can also be asked to take charge of larger incidents.

Group Manager:

They are responsible for the Service across a geographical area (like London) or head a specialist department like Training or Operational Development*.

Area Manager:

They're responsible for a larger geographical area (like Devon) or for heading a Directorate in the Service*.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer:

They have strategic responsibility for one or more Departments within the Service*.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer:

Their main duty is strategic responsibility for Departments, but they also support the Chief Fire Officer*.

Chief Fire Officer:

The Head of the Service. They are responsible for ensuring effective delivery of all Fire & Rescue Service duties*.
*Depending on circumstances can take responsibility for larger operational incidents.

Non-Operational Roles

Human Resources

Advises on and implements policies relating to the effective use of personnel within an organisation.

Equality and Diversity

Promote equality and diversity across the organisation.

Community Fire Safety

Advise businesses, local residents and educational organisations on Fire Safety.

Health and Safety

Responsible for the organisations health and safety obligations.

Web and Graphic design

Responsible for web and graphic design for the Service.

Media Liaison and communication

Handle any news or media enquiries for the Service.

Marketing

Handles the internal and external campaigns.

Information Services

Responsible for the IT services.

Finance

Responsible for the financial aspects. 

Performance Management

Responsible for managing performance of the organisation.

Mapping and Data Management

Responsible for managing data and forecasting outputs and needs.

Strategic Planning

Responsible for ensuring that the Service is meeting the needs of the community.

Statistical analysis

Analysing statistics and data.

Fleet vehicle management

Responsible for maintaining Fire appliances and vehicles.

Fire Control

Responsible for answering the 999 calls.
