Something for everyone
The FRS not only offers diversity in the type of emergencies and roles you might experience, it also gives you diversity in the kind of people you engage with on a daily basis.
Men, women, young, old, big or small. People from all walks of life, but with one thing in common. They want to make a difference and save lives.
So no matter who you are or where you come from, if you've got what it takes, you could enjoy a rewarding career in the Fire & Rescue Service – just like Stephen.

Role: Firefighter
Duration: 3 years
Hi I'm Stephen and I work for the London Fire Brigade in Wandsworth. I joined the service after completing a Law degree at London Metropolitan University.
Having graduated I found myself at a crossroads. I had a good qualification in my pocket but I wanted a more active role than law, in society. So when a career was mentioned in the Fire Service, I jumped at the chance to join.
I attended an outreach day, which was invaluable, and discovered I had a better understanding of the skills needed for the FRS. So I enrolled, trained and became a Firefighter.
Three years on, I'm loving the job and the Service has been great. They have supported me in my active duties and also helped with my community projects.
I've been working to engage young people by writing and recording a song that promotes fire safety and awareness within the home. The video itself has been released on the internet and has had extremely positive feedback – it's reached people all around the globe. Watch it on our YouTube channel.
The best thing about the FRS is that the brigades genuinely encourage original ideas and actively promote diversity in the workforce.
